We met with Dr. Abrams tonight in the NICU and even though we didn't learn too much about Philip's treatment and recovery that we didn't know already, we were very reassured by what a cool neonatologist Dr. Abrams is. He is very laid back and open about everything and we feel very comfortable with him taking care of our precious little guy. We also got a tour of the NICU, which is actually a cozy little place. I suppose if our child has to be in the hospital for an extended period of time, Scottsdale Shea is probably the most comfortable place for us to be.
Dr. Abrams reaffirmed that I will most likely deliver spontaneously in about two weeks, but he said as long as Philip continues to look healthy and strong, there is no reason to induce labor. Since it seems that no one has ever seen a gastroschisis baby stay in the womb longer than 38 weeks, Dr. Abrams said we'll cross that bridge if we do get to that point. And since Philip still doesn't seem to fit the mold for any one type of abdominal wall defect (though all signs point to gastroschisis, so we're sticking with that), its entirely possible that he will surprise everyone, yet again.
Oh, and as a side note - I had another biophysical profile ultrasound this morning (that's where they measure my fluid and watch Philip move and monitor his heart and lungs for 30 min) and we scored 8 out of 8! Before this point we kept getting 6/8 because Philip wasn't practicing his breathing, but today he was moving those little lungs and diaphragm like crazy! :)
